Atlanta Lyric Theatre Announces Six Upcoming Musicals

Atlanta Lyric Theatre is the city s only local professional musical theater company. For their 2013-14 season the company will be showcasing local professional talent in six outstanding shows. After several seasons of performing at the Strand Theatre on the Marietta square, Atlanta Lyric Theatre is thrilled to be moving to a new venue, Cobb Civic Center s Anderson Theatre, for its 34th season. Anderson Theatre is a first class performance venue featuring excellent acoustics. Here are the highlights of the upcoming season.
The season kicks off with the Broadway musical, The Producers, from August 9-25. Audiences will love this outrageous comedy, based on the Mel Brooks film. The long-running Broadway production won 12 Tony Awards. Laughs abound as a Broadway produces, in his attempt to bilk money from his backers, actually comes up with an unexpected smash hit.
Atlanta Lyric Theatre will present the classic musical, Guys and Dolls, October 25-November 10. This romantic comedy about gamblers and their ladies features a Frank Loesser score including Luck Be a Lady and Sit Down You re Rocking the Boat.
Audiences are in for a holiday treat when Atlanta Lyric Theatre presents perennial favorite, White Christmas, in December. Dates are to be announced. This holiday production is not part of the regular season subscription series, but is a special add on. The romantic comedy set at a snowy Vermont inn features music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. This production promises to put everyone into a festive mood.
Duke Ellington s Sophisticated Ladies will play January 3-19, 2014. The award-winning musical re-creates Ellington s Big Band sound and features his most memorable hits including Take the A Train, Satin Doll, and It Don t Mean a Thing If It Ain t Got That Swing.
The entire family can enjoy the Atlanta Lyric Theatre s production of Annie, which will run from April 4-20, 2014. Set in Depression era New York City, a spirited orphan wins hearts with her optimism. Popular numbers from the musical include Hard Knock Life, Easy Street, and Tomorrow.
The season s final production will be the hilarious Monty Python s Spamalot, winner of three Tony Awards. This parody of the King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table legend pokes fun at almost everything. The show is appropriate for ages 12 and older. The production is scheduled for June 13-29, 2014.
The Cobb Civic Center is located at 548 S. Marietta Parkway. The Jenny T. Anderson Theatre seats 600 people. Parking at the facility is free. Tickets are available through the Atlanta Lyric Theatre website.
